Biennial or rarely annual, 25-55 cm, sparsely patent-setulose to more densely adpressed-setulose, profusely branched. Leaves linear-oblong to narrowly lanceolate, basal withered at anthesis. Flowers subsessile, pedicels to 2 mm in fruit. Corolla minute, infundibular, tube 2.5 mm, limb 2-2.5 mm diam. Nutlets depressed-ovoid, 3-4.5 x 2-2.8 mm, very variable in density and disposition of glochids but typically with a row of 1.5-2 mm glochids on margin and 1-2 subsidiary rows equalling or shorter than those of margin; glochids usually dilated at base and.± flattened, but not prolonged into a wing; disc tuberculate, often with a longitudinal crest. Style ±  concealed between nutlets. Fl. 6. Steppe, rocky and stony slopes, waste places, 380-2270 m.
