Stems 15-65 cm, often single, obtusely trigonous, smooth; basal sheaths brown or red-brown, usually entire. Leaves 2-5 mm broad, almost flat, often shorter than stems, dull green, usually hairy at least on sheaths. Male spikes 2-3, glumes ± densely hairy. Female spikes 2-3, usually remote at least from male spikes, cylindrical, 10-45 mm, erect, dense above, pedunculate; lowest bract leaf-like, sheathing, much longer than spike but not exceeding inflorescence. Female glumes ovate-oblong, 5-8 mm, acuminate to aristate, brownish-green, hyaline. Utricles pale green or brownish-green, occasionally dark purplish-brown, ovoid, 5-7 mm, distinctly veined, densely hairy; beak to 2 mm, deeply bifid, scabrid. Moist sandy meadows, hedgerows, ditches, roadsides, forest margins, s.l.-2050 m.

Throughout Europe except extreme N. & S.; C. & S. Russia, Caucasia, C. Iran, N. Africa; naturalised in N. America. Euro-Sib. element.
