Glabrous, glaucous biennial to 1.5 m, Cauline leaves decussate, linear-lanceolate, 5-12 x 1-1.5 cm, bluish-green, apex mucronulate, base shallowly cordate, margin entire. Ray-leaves oblong-lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, 4-7 x 1.5-3 cm. Raylet-leaves triangular-ovate, 2-6 x 1.5-3.2 cm, pale green, apex acutely acuminate. Rays 2-4. Glands 2-horned, horns clavate, yellowish-green, with purplish blotches. Fruit 1.3-1.7 cm diam., ± smooth; endocarp woody. Seeds obliquely dolioliform, 5 mm, rugulose, grey or brown. Fl. 6-7. Naturalized in coastal habitats at s.l.

Probably native in C. & E. Mediterranean; widely naturalized in C. & S. America, Atlantic Islands, N.W. Africa, W., C. & E. Europe, Ethiopia, Georgia and China.
