Tall perennial, up to 2 m. Stems sparsely to densely stellate-pilose, very variable, often setose-stellate, with or without smaller adpressed stellate hairs, or with small stellate hairs only. Leaves somewhat lobed, the upper leaves often rather deeply so, crenate, usually with an indumentum of stellate hairs. Epicalyx segments ½ or more as long as the calyx. Calyx conspicuously striate in flower. Petals white or yellow, rarely pinkish, 40-55 mm. Mericarps hairy in the furrow, with wavy, somewhat interlocking wings. Fl. 5-8. Slopes, fallow fields, steppe, forests, 600-1900 m.
