Annual, 15-30 cm, usually tufted and relatively sturdy. Upper leaf blade linear-lanceolate, 2-3 mm broad, glabrous, ciliate or pilose. Spike 1.5-2 cm , with only 2-3 spikelets, all fertile. Vestigial spikelets 1-2 . Glumes of lower spikelet obovate-oblong or broadly elliptic, truncate, conspicuously veined, 7-10 mrn, setulose, subadpressed-pubescent or velutinous, awns 2-3, 2-7 cm, erecto-patent to deflexed, gradually widening to a 1-1.5 mm base; lemmas bearing 1-2 setaceous awns and 1-2 teeth. Anthers 3 mm. Uppermost spikelets 1/2-1/3 x size of lowermost spikelet, internode bearing uppermost spikelet usually as long as or longer than those of spike1ets below it; awns of uppermost spikelet to 7 cm, overtopping those of lateral spikelets. 2n = 28. Fl. 5-6. Rocky limestone slopes, open Pinus nigra-Quercus woods, steppe, field margins, vineyards etc., s.l 1200 m.
