Tufted annual , 25-30 cm. Upperleaf blade linear-lanceolate, 3-5 mm broad, scabridulous to pilose. Spike linear-lanceolate, 5-7 cm; rachis markedly sinuate, spike slightly constricted between the 9-11 spikelets. Vestigial spikelets 0 or 1. Lateral spikelets barrel-shaped, 6-8 x 3-4 mm, breaking up at rachis joints at maturity and falling with joints adpressed to spikelets; glumes subequal, broadly oblong, 5-6 x 2.5-3 mm, veins parallel and of unequal width, apex rounded-truncate, awnless; lower lemmas ovate-oblong, slightly longer than glumes, at least those of upper lateral spikelets bearing subadpressed awns to 3 x glumes. Uppermost spikelet with unawned truncate glumes; lower 2-3 lemmas bearing a suberect slender awn to 3-4 cm. Fl. 6. Alt. c. 800 m.
