Annual. Stems tufted, geniculate and often branched at base, 8-30 cm, glabrous, green or basal parts and nodes flushed purple. Leaf sheaths striate, glabrous, margins scabridulous. Ligule reduced to fringe of hairs. Leaf blades lanceolate, 1-3.5 x 0.2-0.4 cm, acuminate, ± glabrous, green, margins thickened, white or tinged purple, scabrid-tuberculate. Inflorescence densely spicate; spikelets often paired, 3-4.5 mm, clustered on rachis; the latter disarticulating at base. Lower glume slender, filiform, 1.3 mm; upper glume as long as spikelets, coriaceous, 7-veined and -ribbed; all ribs or only main ones with hooked, curved-ascending or patent tuberculate spines, purple or greenish-yellow with ribs and spines flushed purple, serrulate-acuminate. Lemma ovate-lanceolate, 2.8 x 1 mm, sparsely pilose in centre, acute or acuminate. Palea 2-veined at base, 2.1 mm, glabrous. Anthers oblong, 0.7 mm. Fl. 5-9. Limestone cliffs with thermal pools, gravelly river beds in ravines, Artemisia steppe, sand dunes nr coast, by roadsides, nr s.l.-1800 m.
Old World tropics and subtropics, penetrating into temperate regions and introduced into New World.
