Evergreen shrub or tree up to 10 m, ultimate branches pendulous; young shoots, densely stellate-tomentose, yellowish-brown; buds c. 2 mm, pale reddish-brown, tomentose. Leaves distributed over branches, topmost serrate, lower entire, broadly oblong to ovate, ± rounded at apex or subapiculate, coriaceous, 0.9-4 x 0.9-2.5 cm, rounded or subcordate; veins 5-9, inconspicuous; glabrous or stellate above, tightly adpressed stellate-tomentose, waxy and greyish-white beneath; petiole ± absent or to 6 mm. Peduncle nearly absent. Fruit maturing in second year. Cupule ± cyathiform, to c. 25 mm diam., to 18 mm long, light brown; scales ovate-lanceolate, adpressed, pubescent; acorn to 2/3 exserted, flattened to acute at apex, glabrescent. Fr. 9-10. Limestone slopes in macchie, s.l.-400 m.
