Tree up to 30 m. Young branches glabrous, dark brown at maturity. Winter buds greenish. Leaf blade 5-lobed to c. halfway, 8-12 x 8-14 cm, cordate at base, lobes ovate to ovate-oblong, shortly acuminate, with coarsely crenate-dentate lobes, dark green and glabrous above, glaucescent beneath, glabrous except for whitish pubescence in the vein axils; petiole glabrous, 4,5-15 cm, not lactiferous. Flowers in elongated, pendulous panicles. Fruit wings divaricate at an acute or right angle, c. 30 x 10-12 mm; nutlets weakly compressed, ovate, usually glabrous ; loculus hairy. Fl. spring. Deciduous forest, nr. s.l.-1000 m.
Most of Europe except the N and extreme S, eastwards to 30° E, W. Caucasia. Euro-Sib. element.
