Perennial herb. Stems usually prostrate, rarely ascending. Leaves very variable, entire to weakly dentate, or with 1-2 deep teeth on each side. Sepals saccate, 5-11 mm. Petals violet, 11-19 mm. Fruits 10-13 x 1.5-3 mm, usually terete to inflated, with a sparse to dense indumentum of stellate hairs. A complex species, divisible into 3 subspecies:
1. Fruit 1.5-2 mm broad, inflated; style 6-10 mm .........subsp. macrostyla 
1. Fruit 2-5 mm broad, usually not inflated; style 3.5-6 mm
    2. Fruit 9-10 mm; stems usually 5-10 cm ...............subsp. canescens 
    2. Fruit 12-13 mm; stems usually 10-25 cm .........subsp. cilicica
