Plant 15-25 cm when in flower. Bulb producing a few small bulblets. Leaves 1-2, 4-angled, 17-24 cm at anthesis and elongating later to 55 cm. Bract and bracteole ± equal, ventricose and closely sheathing perianth tube. Perianth tube c. 2 cm. Flowers bicoloured; falls narrowly obovate, 3.5-4 cm; claw 2.5 x 0.6-0.7 cm, green with dark spots; lamina elliptic, obtuse, c. 1.5 x 1 cm, brownish-purple, with a yellow, purple-spotted, median ridge; standards oblanceolate, acute, 4 x 0.6 cm, pale to deep blue, darker veined and shading to green at base; style branches c. 3.5 cm, with narrowly lanceolate acute lobes. Capsule erect at first, pendulous and ovoid with a long-tapering beak at maturity, carried on a peduncle to 10 cm. Fl. 3. Edge of Pinus brutia forest, in Quercus scrub and in fields, 700-850 m.
