Perennial with woody base and several erect to ascending stems, 15-40 cm, branched in upper part, branches simple or with few secondary branches. Leaves white-tomentose when young, later thinly grey-tomentose; leaves of sterile rosettes long-petiolate, pinnatipartite to lyrate with 2- 4- pairs of linear-lanceolate lateral segments 1-3 mm broad and a terminal segment 1-20mm broad, rarely simple; stem leaves pinnatipartite with few pairs of lateral segments or upper simple. Capitula single at the end of branches. Involucre 8-11x 3-6 mm, +/- cylindrical, funnel shaped at fruiting time. Appendages small to medium-sized, not totally concealing basal part of phyllaries, brown, with 4-7 cilia on each side passing into a hyaline border , terminal mucro 0,5-1,5 mm. Flowers rose-purple. Achenes 2,8-3,5 mm; pappus 1,5-4 mm. Fl. 6-7, Open woods , stony slopes, rocks, 900-2300 m.

       3- Involucre soon becaming funnel-shaped 5-6 mm broad, with 10-16 hermaphrodite flowers; mucro hardly 0,5 mm
      4- Appendages very small, usually light-brown or straw-colored; pappus 3,5-4,5 mm; terminal segments of basal leaves 5-20 mm broad.......ssp longipapposa
           4- Appendages larger, brown,; pappus 2,5-3,5 mm; terminal segment of basal leaves 3-8mm broad.............ssp cariensis
