Perennial herb. Rhizome cylindrical, praemorse, giving rise to slender, cylindrical roots. Caudex usually surrounded by remains of old leaf-bases. Stems 1-2, sturdy, erect, 15-60 cm tall, subsulcate. Basal leaves glabrous, pinnate, 3-7-lobed; lobes ovate-orbicular, entire to repand, sometimes crenate, terminal larger than laterals; petioles usually equal to, or longer than, lobed part of leaf. Lower cauline leaves similar to basal leaves; petioles amplexicaul and fused at their bases to c. 2 mm. Lobes of upper cauline leaves occasionally lanceolate. Inflorescence dense, corymbose, c. 2 cm diam. in flower, spreading in fruit. Flowers pink or white. Achene uniformly pubescent, rarely subglabrous. Fl. 5-9. Rocky ledges and slopes, usually in shade, 1500-3500 m.
