Wiry perennial. Stems 5-30 cm, erect, tough. Ligule 0.5-1.5 mm, truncate. Leaves hard, blades erect at first, becoming patent at right angles to sheaths at maturity, green or glaucous, 4-25 cm x 0.3-0.4 mm, tightly involute, ribbed; dead leaves persistent, whitish. Spike 3-5 cm. Spikelets 7-10.5 mm , triangular in transverse section, violet or greenish-violet. Lemma Iinear-lanceolate ; awn 1-3 mm. Anthers 3.5-4 mm. Fl. 7-8. Rocky slopes, alpine pasture, often with Festuca ovina agg. and Agrostis tenuis, 1700-2800 m; calcifuge.
Most of Europe , Caucasia, C. Asia, Greenland, Newfoundland. Euro-Sib. element.
