Perennial. Stems erect, up to 100 cm, slightly winged, glabrous or minutely puberulous. Leaves imparipinnate with 9-15 leaflets. Leaflets of the lower leaves ovate to almost orbicular, petiolulate, cordate at the base, often stipellate, deeply and regularly serrate. Those of the upper leaves narrower and not clearly cordate. Spikes ± elliptic to almost globose, 1,2-2,5 x 1-1,6 cm, maroon or blackish-maroon. Sepals ovate to narrowly ovate, 2,5-4 mm. Stamens 4, usually as long as sepals, rarely longer. Fruit 4-winged, with smooth surfaces. Fl. 6-8. Meadows, stream sides, damp places, 1250-2600 m.
