Similar to A. adiantum-nigrum but smaller, 8-12 cm, fronds not overwintering, base of petiole swollen, black; lamina 2-pinnate, dull green; pinnules ovate-rhombate with triangular teeth. Spores ripe 8-9. On serpentine rocks, 2000-2200 m.

Scattered throughout S. & C. Europe on serpentine rocks.
