Perennial, stems solitary to several, to 30 cm, erect or ascending, unbranched or nearly so. Leaves 18-100 x 5-25 mm, obovate to lanceolate, acute, basal petiolate, cauline usually sessile, adpressed-sericeous, setae on minute tubercles. Inflorescence rather lax, cymes scorpioid at first elongating after flowering. Bracts to 7 mm, linear-lanceolate to linear. Pedicels 1-3 mm in flower, 4-5 mm in fruit. Calyx 12-16 mm in flower, to 30 x 8-9 mm in fruit, lobes coherent at base, lanceolate, chartaceous to membranous when dry. Corolla pale to bright yellow, 15-20 mm, clavate to narrowly infundibular, minutely pubescent. Anthers included, with short sterile truncate tips; filaments much shorter than anthers, inserted below middle of corolla tube. Nutlets 5 x 3.5 mm, broadly ovoid, acute, dorsally and ventrally keeled, smooth to slightly rugose. Fl. 4-7. Quercus scrub, serpentine, limestone slopes and screes, etc., 400-2290 m.
