Tree 7-10 m tall with pyramidal crown. Young branchlets reddish-brown, with large lenticels, glabrous. Buds 6-12 mm long, greenish or greenish-brown, glabrous. Leaves 6-14 x 4-11 cm, usually broadly elliptic,  rarely almost circular, obtuse or shortly acute at apex, with 5-7 lobes on each side; lobes extending 1/3 of the way to midrib, entire at base, serrate above, obtuse or subacute, upper edge of lobes without or with 1-2 small teeth, 10-30 mm long, lower one serrate. Adult leaves coriaceous, glabrous on both sides. Petiole 12-20 mm long. Stipules 15 x 2 mm, caducous. Inflorescence cymose. Flowers up to 16 mm in diameter, hypanthium glabrous. Styles 2-3, free, hairy. Fruits 10-18 mm long, 6-15 mm wide, ellipsoid, red, with small lenticels. Fl. 5-6. Fr. 7-9. Subalpine scrub, 1700-1920 m.
