Stems up to 40 cm, prostrate to erect, simple to much-branched; green, often becoming yellow, red-purple or dull purple or some combination of these in fruit. Terminal spike 5-120 mm, with up to 30 fertile segments. Fertile segments  2,5-6 mm. Seeds 1-2,2 mm. Fl. 7-9. Coastal and inland salt-marshes.

C. & E. Europe, probably in C. Asia.
