Bulb globose or ovoid, 0.8-1 cm diam.; outer tunics black or greyish-brown, coriaceous, inner membranous, often purple. Stem 10-20 cm. Leaves cylindrical, 1-2 mm broad, shorter than or nearly as long as stem. Valves of spathe purple-veined; at least one valve longer than umbel. Umbel 2-4 cm diam., usually dense, 10-many-flowered. Pedicels nearly as long or 2-3 x as long as perianth. Perianth campanulate; segments purplish-pink, rarely pale pink or white, elliptic-oblong, 3.5-4 mm. Filaments slightly exserted, purplish in upper part. Anthers purplish. Ovary globose, distinctly stipitate; style 3-4 mm. Capsule globose, 4 mm. Fl. 6-7. Quercus and Pinus nigra forests, scrub, Cistus laurifolius macchie, stony slopes, rocky places, very dry limestone gravel, 1000-2000 m.
