Bulb ovoid, 1.5-2 cm diam.; outer tunics greyish-black, papery. Stem 20-30 cm, often purple. Leaves 2-5, lorate from a narrowed base, 10-14 mm broad, often recurved and keeled by folding, c. 1/3 x stem. Spathe 2-3-lobed; lobes scarious, purple at base. Umbel hemispherical or rarely spherical, 3-4 cm diam., many-flowered, dense. Pedicels purplish, 2 x perianth. Perianth stellate; segments deep wine-red or intense purple, whitish at base, lanceolate, 5-6 mm. Filaments broader than perianth segments, subulate and gradually attenuate from an ovate broadened base, as long as perianth. Anthers dark purple. Capsule 6-7 mm. Fl. 5-6. Pinus sylvestris woodland, open stands of P. nigra subsp. pallasiana, meadows, hillsides, on limestone rocks and andesite, 1000-2000 m.
