Bulb c. 2-4 cm diarn. Leaves 4-6, very narrowly lanceolate, tapering gradually to apex, synanthous or subhysteranthous with tips just appearing at late flowering time, slightly canaliculate above, keeled beneath, 7-12 mm broad, usually bright shiny green. Aerial portion ofscape 2.5-20 cm at anthesis. Bract 3-6 cm, sometimes bifid at apex. Flower deep yellow, sessile. Perianth tube 5-20 mm; segments oblanceolate or obovate, 3-5.5 x 1-2.1 cm. Filaments 1.5-3.5 cm. Seeds not strophiolate. Fl. 9-11. Usually in or near cultivated land, 20-1000 m.

Widespread in the Mediterranean area, eastwards to Iran, Iraq and USSR . Medit. element.
