Stem solid, terete, 20-50 cm. Basal leaves 1-pinnate, segments ovate, dentate to deeply incised, 10-20 x 3-5 cm., Upper leaves 2-3-pinnate or pinnatisect, segments linear, shortly petioled or subsessile. Rays 2-6, unequal, 0,5-2,5 cm. Bracts 0-1, linear-setaceous, up to 5 mm. Bracteoles c. 3, linear-lanceolate, c. 3 mm. Pedicels unequal, 0-3 mm. Fruit 3-4 mm, pale gold-brown when ripe, immature drying black. Mericarps united. Primary ridges wavy, secondary ± straight. Dorsal vittae 0, commissural 0-2. Fl. 5-6. Quercus scrub, waste ground,fallow fields, 320-1300 m.
Widely cultivated as a herb , and naturalized throughout most regions of the world. Origin unknown.
