Stems erect, up to 100 cm, with deflexed, somewhat flattened hairs. Leaves 1-2-pinnate, the ultimate segments usually pinnatifid, strigose, somewhat glaucous or noticeably paler beneath. Inflorescences terminal. Rays 5-8, subspreading setose. Bracts 4-6, setose. Petals white, c. 1 mm. Fruit ovoid, scarcely compressed, 3-4 x 2-2,5 mm, covered all over the surface with upwardly arching spines; between the spines are short papillae. Fl. 7-10. Meadows, slopes, s.l.-1300 m.
Europe, Morocco, Caucasia, scattered eastwards to Japan and introduced in Malaysia.
