Rootstock cylindrical, branched at top. Stems 20-100 cm or more, scandent or subscandent, branched, suffruticose below. Leaves ovate to ovate-lanceolate, 2-6 x 2-4 cm, acute to obtuse, evergreen, subcoriaceous, base deeply cordate with short round auricles; petiole 5-10 mm. Peduncles 1-4 cm. Perianth 2-4.5 cm, outside brownish-purple, or yellow with purple striations, glabrous; utricle 3-7 x 2-8 mm, ovate to globose; tube U-curved, 1-3 mm broad at base, gradually dilated above to 3-11 mm; limb 8-20 x 8-15 mm, ovate to ovate-oblong, acute or obtuse, often hairy at throat. Ovary pubescent. Capsule oblong to spherical. Fl. 5. Chalky hillsides, scrub, to c. 800 m.
