Rigid prostrate or low trailing shrub, more strongly woody and spiny than A. acutifolius, stems striate-ridged and scabrid-papillose. Cladodes 1-5 per echinate fascicle, 3-7 x 0.5 mm, stoutly spinose, subequal to unequal, longest cladode scarcely longer to only 1.5 x longer than next longest cladode. Flowers usually 1 per fascicle. Pedicels surrounded by a group of bracteoles. Male perianth 34.5 mm, creamy-white, inner segments incurved. Berry black, c. 8 mm; seeds 1-3. Fl. 6-8. Hillsides, macchie, limestone gorges, coastal slopes, cliffs and dunes, s.l.-550 m.
