Erect, glabrous, graceful herb, 75-100 cm, with slender erecto-patent branches. Spur 1-3 mm. Cladodes 3-6 per fascicle, erecto-patent, often unequal, subulate, 1-5-furrowed, 6-15 x 0.2 mm, green or rarely glaucescent, mucronulate. Flowers often borne separately from cladode fascicles. Pedicels 10-15 mm,articulate hear middle or above it. Male perianth 5-6 inm, yellowish-green. Anthers c. 1.5 mm. Berry red, 6-8 mm; seeds usually 2-4. Fl. 5-6. Steppe, meadows, limestone cliffs, volcanic and calcareous soils, dunes, sandy shores, s.l.-1770 m.
N.W. Africa, most of Europe eastwards to C. Asia.
