Perennial herb with branched, woody stock; stems 30-100 cm. Leaves narrowly lanceolate, sinuate; lobes shallow, angled, digitately 2-4-spinous. Capitula mostly 3-10, in a lax irregular corymb. Involucre wit a short, crisp pubescence; median phyllaries 2.5-3.5 mm broad, ending in a distinct, patent, subulate appendage 7-15 mm. Corolla purple. Anther appendages equally vittatet for their whole length. Pappus hairs scabrous at apex; those of outer flowers scabrous. Fl. 5-7. Open Pinus woods, stony mountain sides, scree, s.l.-1800m.
