Stems 7-32 cm. Leaves 9-40 x 1-5 mm. Capitula fusiform when young, widening slightly at apex when inner phyllaries expand, then 15-20 mm long including inner phyllaries. Involucre glabrous; outer phyllaries ovate-mucronate, adpressed, hyaline; inner linear-elliptic, erect, pink to purple, deciduous when achenes are ripe. Pappus scales 5, c. 2 x length of achene. Fl. 6-8. Steppe, waste land, 1100-1850 m.
