Shrub, up to 2 m. Young stems with yellow bark and black lenticels which persist in the older, greyer bark. Leaves much longer than the spines, ovate-elliptical or obovate, the margins varying from finely spinulose to subentire, often on the same bush,and without stomata on the upper leaf surface. Racemes 15-25-flowered. Berries remaining red when ripe. FI. 5. Stony slopes and gullies in woods and scrub, 900-1500 m.
