Biennial, hirsute, 80-100 cm, stems stout, ± erect, simple. Basal leaves large, lamina oblong-elliptic, 5-12 x 1-2,5 cm, petiole to 10 cm; cauline elliptic to narrowly lanceolate, rarely linear-Ianceolate, sessile, semi-amplexicaul. Cymes forming a panicle, usually ebracteate, very rarely with 1 bracts near base. Pedicels deflexed in fruit. Calyx 3-4 mm in flower, to 9 mm in fruit. Corolla dark purple, 5-6 mm, cylindrical-campanulate; scales subquadrate. Nutlets depressed-ovoid, 6-7 mm, prominently marginate, disc sparsely glochidiate, ventral and lateral surfaces densely glochidiate. FI. 4-7. Abies-Fagus forest, deciduous woodland, stony limestone slopes, meadows, banks, 500-2100 m.
