Often very robust, up to 100 cm. Leaves linear to linear-lanceolate, long acuminate, 2-6 mm wide. Bracts lanceolate, acuminate, brown, membranous, usually equalling the capitulum. Bracteoles 4, membranous, with scarious margins, always narrowed gradually into an acute or acuminate apex, sometimes mucronate, about ½ as long as the calyx. Calyx 16-22 x 3,2-5,2 mm, widest in the lower half; teeth 5 mm, lanceolate, mucronate with scarious margins. Petal limb 5-6 mm, red, dentate, barbulate. FI. 6-9. Rocks, fields, eroded banks, oak scrub, 80-1000 m.
