Very robust perennial, spinose, 40-60 cm. Leaves 20-70 x 4-8 mm, lanceolate, widest in the upper half, thick, very stiff, usually recurved, narrowed from about the middle to a long acute spiny apex. Inflorescence freely branched, flowers often in groups of 2-4, pedicels robust, 5-10 mm, Bracteoles 6-8, rarely the outer pair subtending more than 1 flower,½ calyx length, lanceolate, pale, with a spiny, green, patent apex. Calyx 36-39 x 4.5-5 mm, cylindrical, puberulent, teeth 10-11 mm, lanceolate, mucronate, with a narrow scarious border. Petal limb 11-13 mm, white or white with reddish spots at the base, finely fimbriate to more than½, densely barbulate. Fl. 6-8. Rocky slopes and steppe hills, c. 2300 m.
