Dianthus macroflorus

Perennial, solitary, or several-stemmed, subpruinose herbs. Stems erect to ascending, 50–100 cm tall, branching from middle or upper nodes, 13–17-noded, glabrous or sometimes sparsely pubescent below, purplish and 2–4 mm diameter at base. Leaves linear, flattened, glabrous, margins scabrous, with ciliate and scarious near base, apex acuminate; lower withered after anthesis, 100–150 x 3–5 mm; middle usually withered after anthesis, 90–120 x 2–4 mm, separated from stem, obviously longer than internodes, soft, 7–9-veined, sheaths about as long as they are wide; upper separated from stem, sometimes purplish at base, nodes swollen. Inflorescence very lax, flowers solitary; branches  angled at 45–60⁰, glabrous, up to 8 cm long; pedicels 10–50 mm, glabrous, greenish. Epicalyx scales 8–12; outer herbaceous, greenish or straw-colored, 3–5-veined, glabrescent, separated from calyx, 2/3–3/4 as long as calyx, narrowly linear, 20–26 x 1.4– 1.7 mm, with scarious margins, apex acuminate except arista, arista 3/4–4/5 as long as scale; inner herbaceous, greenish or straw-colored, 9–13-veined, pubescent, separated from calyx, 2/3–3/4 as long as calyx, elliptic-lanceolate, 18–23 x 3.5–4.5 mm, with ciliate and scarious margins, apex acuminate except arista, arista 1/4–1/3 as long as scale. Calyx lanceolate, 30–35 x 4.5–6 mm, distinctly 32–40-veined, sparsely pubescent, greenish; teeth narrowly triangular to oblong-lanceolate, 9–11 x 1.6–2.1 mm, pubescent, 7–11-veined, with ciliate and narrowly scarious margins, apex acuminate. Petals 35–40 mm long; limb obovate, 14–17 x 9–12 mm, about 1/2 as long as petal, ±completely exserted from calyx, unspotted, barbulate, pink, yellowish-green beneath, 9–11-toothed from middle to apex, teeth broadly triangular, up to 1/7 as long as limb; claw 19–24 x 2.2–2.5 mm, collar 1/2 as wide as claw. Capsule not exsertedfrom calyx. Seeds suborbicular, 2.5–3.2 x 2.2–3 mm, blackish.
