Tufted to cushion-forming herb, 5-25 cm, woody at the base. Stems with prominent swollen nodes below, bearing dense globose axillary fascicles at flowering time. Leaves 8-30 mm, linear-setaceous to subterete, stiff, spinose, all, except the ± erect upper leaves of the sterile shoots, spreading at an angle of 30-90o. Inflorescence a usually compact, 3-12-flowered cyme or cymose cluster; pedicels 8-15 mm, very rarely up to 45 mm, usually ± erect. Sepals 4-5 mm, ovate-Ianceolate to lanceolate. Petals obovate to oblanceolate, much longer than, sepals. Capsule cylindrical, exceeding calyx. Fl. 6-7. Rocky places, 900-2700m
