Erect tree, up to 10, rarely to 20 m. Twigs sharply quadrangular. Adult leaves triangular, acute or acuminate, the tips somewhat outstanding, 1-5-9 mm, with an indistinct dorsal gland. Cones globose, 6-9 mm, borne on erect pedicels, dark brown or black. Seeds 1-2, free. Often forming scrub above the tree-line, 700-1900 m.
