Stout perennial, with sheathed creeping rhizomes and branched roots. Stems 1-2.5 m, terete or bluntly trigonous, noded, hollow. Leaves 6-10 mm broad, linear, keeled, with long, slender triquetrous point; margin and midrib antrorsely serrulate-scabrid. Sheaths closed, inner face V-shaped; ligule absent. Inflorescence an elongate compound panicle consisting of 3-10 rays bearing numerous aggregated spikelets. Spikelets 3-5 mm, 1-2-flowered, ovoid-lanceolate, sessile or pedicellate, reddish-brown. Glumes 2.8-4.6 mm, lanceolate, acute, navicular with distinct mid-vein, smooth. Stamens 2, anthers c. 1.8 mm. Stigmas 3, style base thickened, caducous. Nut ovoid, 3.1-3.5 x 1.6-1.9 mm, shortly acuminate, dark glossy brown. Fl. 5-7. Basic marshes, lagoons, swamps and slow-flowing rivers, s.l.-1000 m.
