Tufted or densely tufted annual. Stems erect, 3-15 cm, 0.2-0.3 mm diam., striate, glaucous, glabrous. Leaves drying involute, narrowly linear, 0.5-2 cm, acute, glabrous, sheaths reddish or pale coloured. Inflorescence of 1-2 spikelets, glabrous. Bract 1, lanceolate, 2.5-4.5 mm, subacute, much longer than inflorescence. Spikelet ovoid, 1.5-3.5 x 0.8-2 mm. Glumes ovate, 1.2-1.8 x 0.5-0.8 mm, acute, glabrous, upper half reddish-brown, keel green. Stamens 2; anthers 0.3 mm, yellow. Stigmas 3,0.6 mm. Nut elliptic-obovoid, 0.5-0.9 x 0.2-0.6 mm, longitudinally ribbed and transversely striate, light to dark reddish-brown. Fl. 5-10. Eutrophic pools, boggy places nr streams, wet meadows, andesite rock, shaded  forest paths, 100-1960 m.
Europe, Lebanon, N.W. Iran, Afghanistan, Yemen, N.W. Himalayas to Tibet, Egypt, Morocco, W. Cameroons, E. & S. Africa, Australia and Tasmania; introduced in N. America.
