Stems of 2 types, the fertile, non-green stems produced before the green sterile stems. Sterile stems 20-80 cm, green, branched, slightly rough, with 6-19 deep grooves. Sheaths green, teeth as many as grooves, 1-ribbed, acute, with blackish tips. Central hollow somewhat less than ½ the stem diameter. Branches spreading, 3-4 grooved, the lowest internode longer than the stem sheath. Fertile stems up to 25 em, simple, brownish, with 4-6 distant leaf-sheaths. Cone 1-4 cm. Waste places, stream sides, etc., lip to 1700 m.
