Deciduous shrub, 1-6 m; stem terete, sparsely puberulent. Leaves almost sessile; lamina elliptic-lanceolate, 4,5-9 x 1,3-5 cm, serrulate. Racemes axillary, 3-8-flowered, axis to 5,5 cm; pedicels to 1 cm, glabrous or not, articulated with fruit; bracts to 9 mm, leaf-like. Flowers 5-merous. Calyx to 1,7 mm, lobes free to connate. Corolla pink in bud but whitish when open, ± tubular, 6-7,5 x c. 4 mm, glabrous. Stamens 10; filaments c. 2,2 mm; anthers c. 4,5 mm, tubules c. 2,2 mm, dehiscing by short slits, spurs small. Ovary 5-locular; style 6-8 mm. Fruit purple-black, glaucous. Fl. 5-7. Open Fagus or Abies forest, scrub, often with Rhododendron, s.l.-1830 m.
