Prostrate or ascending annual up to 10 cm; stems with adpressed sub-simple to bifurcate hairs. Leaves 2-4 cm; leaflets 8-12 mm, linear-elliptic, acute, both surfaces with adpressed ± simple or bifurcate hairs, 4-7-paired; stipules 2-3 mm, triangular, white-hairy. Peduncles c. 1 cm. Flowers in globose spikes of 6-12 subsessile flowers. Bracts c. 1 mm, lanceolate. Calyx 2-3 mm, campanulate, white simple-pilose; teeth 0·5 mm. Corolla white or yellow; standard 3-4 mm. Stamens 5. Legume 7-9 mm long, triangular-ovoid, bigibbous at base, dorsiventrally flattened except at apex, ±adpressed, white simple-hairy. Fl. 5.
Mediterranean area. Medit. element. Turkish material belongs to subsp. epiglottis. Subsp. asperulus Nyman, which has very narrow leaflets and peduncles equal in length to leaves, is restricted to S. Spain and N.W. Africa.
