Shrub or tree, 3-10 m.·Leaflets 3-5-paired, 30-50 x 30-40 mm, elliptical to orbicular, coriaceous, dark glossy green above, pale green below. Inflorescence c. 50-flowered. Flowers unisexual or hermaphrodite, green. Fruit 10-20 x 1,5-2 cm, dark brown, pendulous. Fl. 9-11. Fixed.dunes, macchie etc., ascending to 300 m.
S. Europe, Cyprus, W. Syria, N. Africa. Medit. element. Native, but also cultivated and naturalised. The fruits are used for fodder.
