Annual, 15-30 cm, covered with simple hairs. Leaflets 8-15 x4-8 mm, mostoften obovate, rarely ovate or rhomboid-oblanceolate, truncate or apiculate, with a small terminal tooth; sometimes some or all leaflets laciniate; stipules dentate with 4-7 teeth, the uppermost tooth longer. Peduncle 1-5-flowered, slender, straight or curved downwards, about twice as long as petiole. Flowers 6-8 mm. Calyx teeth as long as tube. Corolla 2 x calyx or shorter. Young fruit contracted within the calyx. Fruit cylindrical, flat on both surfaces, 4-10 mm high, always spiny, glabrous ; coils 3-5, hardened at maturity, all equal except the first and the last, 5-10-mm diam.; surface of each coil with a dense net of veins: spines 0,5-3 mm, often very irregular, some forked, angle of insertion about 90°. Fl. 3-5. Mainly cultivated and fallow fields, 300-1000 m.
