Unarmed, strongly aromatic shrub, 1-2 m. Leaves up to 8,5 x 10 cm, glabrous above, sparsely pubescent with sessile aromatic glands beneath. Inflorescence a drooping 5-10-flowered raceme, with a glabrous axis. Bracteoles c. 1 mm. Flowers hermaphrodite, reddish- or brownish-green; hypanthium campanulate; sepals recurved; petals c. ½ as long as sepals, whitish. Fruit globose, up to 10mm diam., black or rarely olive-green.
Native in C. & E. Europe though much cultivated and widely naturalized elsewhere.
