Plant with creeping rhizome, mat-forming to laxly caespitose; intravaginal shoots absent. Stems 50-100 cm, with 2-4 basal leaves. Inflorescence many-flowered, usually lax; first bract forming an apparent prolongation of stem, second usually short. Outer perianth segments ovate, acute, mucronate; inner shorter, narrowly elliptic, obtuse. Stamens c. 2/3 x perianth; anthers c. 2 x filaments. Capsule ovoid-trigonous, 2.5-3.5 mm, obtuse or subacute, mucronate, equalling or slightly exceeding perianth. Seeds 0.8-1.2 mm, appendages unequal. Fl. 5-7. Saltmarshes and saline meadows, edge of saline crater lake, rarely other damp ground, s.l.-1050 m.
