Perennial with strong creeping rhizome, often densely mat-forming; stems 40-130 cm, with 1-2 cauline leaves; rhizome also producing single, long leaves from abbreviated shoots.. Leaves 20-100 cm, pluritubulose with a central vascular bundle, perfectly septate. Inflorescence broad, with patent branches, of 10-50 heads; heads 5-10-flowered. Perianth segments elliptic, 2-2.5 mm, obtuse. Capsule slightly exceeding perianth, ovoid-trigonous, with depressed sides, attenuate, mucronate. Fl. 6-7. Fens, wet meadows, margins of watercourses, s.I.-100 m.
