Perennial, laxly caespitose with occasional creeping rhizomes. Sterns 15-40 cm, with some basal and 3-4 usually long cauline leaves. Leaves to 12 cm, 1.5-4 mm broad, hairy at base and sparsely along margins. Lowest, leaf-like bract usually exceeding inflorescence. Inflorescence usually consisting of 1 head or a dense group of heads, rarely also with 1-5 unequally pedunculate heads. Perianth segments ovate, usually acuminate, 2.5-3 mm, ± equal, dark to blackish-brown with lighter margins. Capsule shorter than perianth, trigonous-spheroidal, with very short mucro, brown at apex, always paler than perianth. Seeds 1-1.2 mm, caruncle 0.1-0.3 mm. Fl. 5-7. Meadows and bare earth, 1700-3350 m.
