Shortly rhizomatous perennial, greyish lanate-villous, lacking stolons. Stems stout, erect or ascending, 6-30 cm Basal leaves oblong-elliptic, attenuate below. Cauline leaves 1-2-paired, obovate-oblong, crenate-dentate. Verticillasters crowded, 4-6-flowered. Bracts obovate-orbicular, coarsely 3-7 dentate, exceeding flowers, often purplish. Calyx 6-9 mm, teeth 1-2 x tube. Corolla 10-13 mm, with twisted exannulate tube, limb resupinate, 'lower lip' cream, 3-lobed, 'upper lip' violet-blue, bifid. Stamens included in tube. Fl. 4- 7. Forests, scrub, rocky slopes and pasture, s.I.-3130 m.
