Similar in facies and general dimensions to S. microstegia, but stems not or scarcely lanate at base, leaf indumentum generally much thinner, leaf margins irregularly erose, corollas usually somewhat larger, often with a violet tinged upper lip. 2n = 22. Fl. 4-6. Limestone and igneous slopes, rock ledges, with Pinus, 300-2000 m.
S. Europe, N.W. Africa. Medit. element. From lower altitudes than its close ally, S. microstegia, flowering earlier and always in Mediterranean or sub-Mediterranean habitats.
