Perennial herb. Stems to c. 1 m, erect, branched above, ± densely glandular-villous. Leaves simple, ovate-triangular, 8-14 x 5-11 cm, sagittate-hastate, serrate, sparsely pilose on veins and with sessile glands; petiole c. 7-11 cm. Verticillasters 4-6-flowered, distant. Bracts ovate, c. 10 x 6 mm; bracteoles present. Pedicels c. 5 mm, erecto-patent, elongating in fruit. Calyx tubular to campanulate, c. 12 mm, to c. 17 mm in fruit, densely glandular-villous; upper lip 1-dentate, ± straight. Corolla yellow with brownish markings, 30-40 mm; tube exserted, straight for c. 15 mm, villous within; upper lip falcate. Stamens B. Nutlets ovate-trigonous, c. 3.5 x 2 mm. Fl. 7-10. Moist places in deciduous forest and scrub and in Picea forest, 780-2360 m.
C. & S. Europe, Caucasia, N. & N.W. Iran. Hyrcano-Euxine element. A very distinctive species, and a characteristic component of the Black Sea coast forest vegetation.
